Light Out of Darkness

Lent Devotion #1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
[Genesis 1:1-4]

As we refocus our minds and hearts towards the gospel of Jesus Christ during this lent season, it is fitting that we start at the beginning. And God being rich in his wisdom, found it fitting to present this gospel in the first 4 verses of His Word. You see, the gospel is the good news that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).” The gospel is God saving us while we were dead in our trespasses. The gospel is God shining His glorious light out of the darkness. In fact, in 2 Corinthians Paul explains “God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (Ch. 4:6).” The gospel was God’s intention from the beginning. God always planned to shine light out of the darkness. During this lent season, let us pray for God to reveal that light within our hearts; that the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ would shine ever so bright.

Prayer: Lord, let the knowledge of your glory shine in the face of Jesus Christ. Let light shine out of the darkness of my heart. Let me see Jesus as glorious and beautiful, Amen.
